We were created to grow and evolve. Growth however is uncomfortable. It requires learning, stretching, adapting and a lot of risks. Because of the uncertainty involved in taking risks however, so many people have become paranoid and allowed themselves to degenerate into mere onlookers in life. They just sit back and watch others live their lives.

Let’s take a look into your own life as a case study. When was the last time you tried something new or took a risk no matter how little? Don’t you always say, “I wish someone does something about that?” Why do you always intuitively pictures others well-suited for a challenge but yourself? The answer is quite simple. Maybe you’ve lost it. Or, maybe you’ve not. Maybe you timidly diminished your capacity to dare and faked a cripple out of yourself.

The biggest risk of all times is not taking risks. If we don’t take worthwhile risks, we will accomplish nothing worthwhile in life. Imagine what could have happened if Columbus never stepped out of his comfort zone to discover new harbor; If Rosa Parks never said “My feet hurt”; If Mahatma Gandhi just sat back and wished the world was a better place; If Martin Luther King has kept his dreams to himself; If David just wished Goliath wasn’t so mean?

The issue is that without taking risk, you can’t exploit any opportunities. You can live a quiet and reasonably happy life, but you are unlikely to create something new, and you are unlikely to make your mark on the world. That wasn’t the creator’s original plan for you. You are wired for greatness. There is no greatness in mere wishes. If wishes were horses, beggars will ride.

Goliath is very mean. Your greatness is directly proportional to your willingness to dare. To eat an egg, you have to break the shell. Life, however, seems to have a habit of making ways for the person who knows where he’s going. What do you really want? Don’t tell me, just go for it! Reluctance to take chances holds you back in life. You are as great as the mountains you are willing to courageously surmount.

Sir Edmund Hillary who was the first successful person to climb Mount Everest had these to say, “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.”

What are you scared of anyway? Failure? Failure is a consequence, a result, not a person. Fear of failure must never be the reason not to try something new. If you fear failure, you will never be great, because failures are intrinsic raw materials for success. The single reason Africa is still backwards is her culture of fear. Franklin D. Roosevelt said it all well, “Only thing we have to fear is fear itself”

“Our doubts are our traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.” – William Shakespeare

Taking risks improves your self-image. You respect yourself more. If you could kill the bear, you can kill the Goliath! Your ability to courageously tackle problems improves with each new experience. You get better, not because you were successful with the last task, but because you dared. Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing. You learn, you evolve, and you grow; just as you were originally meant to.

Just look around you. There are still mountains to conquer, Goliath to kill, dreams to achieve. What are you doing about it? Waiting for heroes to show up? The “hero” is you. The world is waiting for you. Be audacious. Take the bull by the horns. Get up and face that giant. That’s how to kill Goliaths!
